Image and Video PIV study of forward flight aerodynamics in the mango stem borer (B. rufomaculata). The image shows the vortices shed behind one of the beetles as it flies tethered in our wind tunnel. The study was carried out in collaboration with Prof. Roi Gurka of Coastal Carolina University. Ever wondered what it's like to be the size of a miniature insect? For one thing, electrostatic forces can overcome your weight and become a serious problem. The video shows an ant in a 155 kV/m electrostatic field. The set-up was built to measure the ability of tiny whiteflies to accumulate and store an electrostatic charge.
